The White Roof Project
(All day) | The Bowery Mission -Open to the Public227 BoweryNY, NY, 10002
New York City is considered an Urban Heat Island. That means it has an enormous amount of dark surfaces that trap heat, like rooftops, and make it up to 27°F hotter than suburbs. This causes a number of problems: for one, cooling down the buildings wastes a massive amount of energy. There is a simple solution: Painting roofs with energy saving white reflective paint.
The White Roof Project will be painting the roof of the Bowery Mission on September 18th through the 20th. That's over 10,000 square feet so we're going to need a lot of help! If you'd like to volunteer for one of our painting parties just go to www.whiteroofproject.com/volunteer-now. Enter your name and email address and we'll be in touch. It's that easy!
If you can't make it but you'd still like to help out, you can donate to the project at www.whiteroofproject.com/adopt-a-roof. All proceeds go towards painting white roofs.
This event is proudly partnered with the Sierra Club, NYC Coolroofs, The Bowery Mission, and White Tops NYC.

Risk & Resiliency: Risk Transfer & Adaptation in Developing Economies
2:30pm - 4:00pm | Undisclosed Location - NYC -Invite Only
The first event following the launch of Climate Week 2010 will focus on climate adaptation with Swiss Re and The Climate Group proudly hosting this important discussion.
Climate change is already happening and the decisions we take in adapting to the situation will have a major impact on the continued growth and development of developing economies.
Reducing carbon emissions is essential, but alone it is insufficient to meet the challenges of climate change. The current and potential impacts of severe weather will force society to increase its resilience through both physical and financial means.
Developing countries face the greatest challenges with the least means at their disposal. Helping them to adapt involves far more than purely doing the right thing and will require a strategy driven by both business and political actions.
How can we achieve this goal? What are the roles of the public and private sectors?

A panel discussion: "A Cap-and-Trade for US-based GHG Emitters is the Optimum Option"
6:00pm - 9:00pm | -Open to the Public305 7th Avenue, 17th FloorNY, NY, 10001
Please join us for a panel discussion on a cap-and-trade system and impending EPA regulation. While it is unclear when legislation will pass, it is almost certain that greenhouse gases will be regulated in the US in one form or another. Without clear action from the US Congress, the EPA is mandated to regulate greenhouse gases. The industry remains cautious and concerned with the consequences of relying on a top-down approach instead of market forces.
The panel will focus on the future of the cap-and-trade and potential consequences for industries affected. Panelists will also debate on what it means for the EPA to be the agency implementing and executing greenhouse gas regulation in the US.
Panelists include:
- Michael Gerrard is a world-renowned expert and most prolific writer on environmental law in the U.S. Michael Gerrard has an almost unique ability to bridge the public interest and corporate worlds. His law practice has largely involved helping large corporations and real estate developers comply with, and in many cases surpass, the requirements of the environmental laws. He is currently the Director for Climate Change Law at Columbia Law School.
- Rena Gelb heads operations and leads strategic development of Carbon Credit Capital. Rena manages investment and carbon finance activities, oversees the company's growth domestically and internationally, and works closely with in-house professionals and international partners.
- Senior executives from power and financial industries are to be confirmed.
-
The panel will be moderated by Mary Rose Brusewitz who is a partner at Strasburger & Price, LLP law firm focusing on Corporate and Securities, International, Energy and Climate Change and Sustainable Energy areas. Mary Rose concentrates her practice on Latin American transactions, most recently in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, and Colombia among others, representing major Latin American companies as well as U.S., European, and Asian entities doing business in Latin America and elsewhere. Mary Rose regularly works in the area of renewable energy and assists clients in registering, selling and otherwise monetizing carbon credits.
