Geoengineering the Climate: Ethics, Potential and Politics
2:00pm - 4:00pm | Columbia University, Morningside Campus, Alfred Lerner Hall, -Open to the Public2920 BroadwayNY, NY, 10027
Join the Columbia Climate Center for an afternoon event to explore the next steps for geoengineering with Eli Kintisch, author of Hack the Planet: Science's Best Hope – or Worst Nightmare – for Averting Climate Catastrophe, and Prof. Scott Barrett, expert in international agreements who is currently studying the politics and economics of geoengineering.
Average global temperatures for the decade ending in 2009 were the highest ever measured. Meanwhile emissions of greenhouse gases continue to rise. While there is recognition that reducing emissions is necessary to avoid future changes to Earth’s climate, there is concern that such efforts may be too little, too late.
In search for a Plan B, deliberate large-scale interventions in the climate system to reduce global warming, or geoengineering, have been receiving increasing attention. The UK Royal Society published a report in 2009 exploring the associated science, governance and uncertainty. In March, almost two hundred scientists and policy experts from around the world met to debate how to regulate real-world experiments to block the sun or to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. “Hacking the planet” by adding particles to the stratosphere or brightening clouds, will likely have uncertain effects and far-reaching impacts. To date, this controversial field has been primarily in the realm of discussions and modeling, but experts recently have begun drafting guidelines for interventions.
The questions that surround geoengineering are myriad. What constitutes safe or minimal experiments that don't require rules? Is a treaty needed? Should the world issue a moratorium, or outright ban, medium or large scale geoengineering experiments? What role should the UN play, if any?
This event is open to the public but you will need to RSVP. For further information regarding this event, please contact Columbia Climate Center by sending email to ccc@ei.columbia.edu.

Praise for Hack the Planet
Publisher's Weekly gave a starred review to Kintisch's book on geoengineering, published by Wiley and Sons.
"Anyone who considers themselves scientifically literate had better get versed in the new discipline of geo-engineering--or planet-hacking, as Eli Kintisch calls it in this nuanced and useful new account. This discussion is not going to go away anytime soon!"

Green Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) for a Sustainable Future
3:00pm - 5:30pm | Andaz Hotel -Open to the Public75 Wall Street,NY, NY, 10005
The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the Global e-Sustainability Initiative (GeSI) are organizing an event on “Green ICT for a sustainable future” which will take place on 24 September 2010 from 15.00 to 17.30 hours in New York, United States of America, during Climate Week NYC.
The transition to a ‘green’ economy poses many challenges, however also opens significant opportunities for economic development in developed and developing countries. Through innovation in low-carbon technologies, countries can capture economic value ‘at home’ through entrepreneurship, job creation and new venture development.
These development goals can be simultaneously pursued while securing energy independence and mitigating the effects of climate change as developing countries play a crucial role in catalyzing and deploying the clean technology innovations of the future.
This workshop will present a series of case studies (Home energy monitoring kit; HVAC automation system; Eco-driving software solution; Telecommuting; E-health delivery system; Telepresence system) and will also discuss:
- how “green ICT” initiatives and applications, such as smart grids, cloud computing, videoconferencing, e-government and dematerialization of content, can play a major role in reducing CO2 emissions, and ensuring sustainable development and green growth;
- how to measure the impact of "green ICT" on climate change and how to standardize a methodology to calculate the impact of ICTs on GHG emissions;
- how a standardized methodology, and other initiatives, might assist countries to obtain and make best use of ICTs to address climate change;
-
how the ICT industry can promote awareness and implementation of "green ICT".
